HERMISTON, Ore.-Outdoor burning season is closed within the Umatilla County Fire District 1 service area as of June 1.

According to UCFD1, violation of the burn policy may be punishable by a fine up to $250.00 or the cost of fire response and/or suppression for apparatus and personnel, whichever is greater in accordance with the Fire District Cost Recovery Ordinance.

Outdoor burning is not allowed June 1 through September 30 but will reopen on October 1. A full breakdown of UCFD1’s burn policy, including some frequently asked questions concerning when burn season is, and what can be burned is available online.

The fire season is already off to a hot start in Eastern Oregon and Washington, with UCFD1 responding to a grass fire that threatened buildings and cars in the area of Lilac Lane east of Hermiston, before being contained on May 31.

The Les Blair Fire broke out in South Benton County on the afternoon of May 31 and, fueled by the wind, scorched about 500 acres before it was put out, according to Benton County Fire District 1.
