HERMISTON, Ore.-Good Shepherd Health Care System (GSHCS) hosted a provider social, highlighting the work of Good Shepherd’s Board-Certified Interventional Radiologist Dr. Aparna Baheti, in Hermiston on the afternoon of October 13.

In addition to her work with GSHCS, Dr. Baheti runs a standalone outpatient Interventional Radiology (IR) facility in the Seattle area, and is involved in the medical community, where she “educates the world about IR,” speaking at conferences and co-hosting the BackTable Vascular and Interventional (VI) Podcast.

“It’s doctors, nurses, and technicians just nerding out on IR for an hour,” said, Dr. Baheti, of the podcast that covers IR case discussions, as well as specialized topics.

Podcast episodes are available through the BackTable app or website.

Additionally, Dr. Baheti is the official regional expert on Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE), a new option for treating osteoarthritis.

Dr. Baheti has performed 150 GAE procedures, a nonsurgical, minimally invasive outpatient procedure to reduce osteoarthritis pain in the knee.

GAE works by injecting embolic particles (nontoxic polyvinyl alcohol PVA microspheres) into the arteries to block abnormal blood flow, decreasing inflammation and increasing mobility.

According to Dr. Baheti, GAE procedures reduce knee pain and inflammation, while increasing mobility and quality of life and are a good option for those hoping to delay or avoid knee replacement surgery.

GSHCS Interventional Radiology utilizes state-of-the-art technology to offer advanced treatment and personalized care including several embolization procedures, to treat a variety of medical conditions.

“Interventional Radiology at Good Shepherd offers all the essential services, as well as advanced intervention procedures,” said Dr. Baheti.

GSHCS  was the first health care system in Oregon to acquire the HistoSonics Edison® Robotic System to treat liver tumors with histotripsy, a revolutionary treatment that uses ultrasound energy to target and destroy liver tumors.

Now patients from across the country and around the world are coming to GSHCS in Hermiston for the non-invasive treatment option for liver tumors.

Following her presentation on GAE, Dr. Baheti fielded questions from fellow doctors and other GSHCS colleagues about GAE, as well as how IR could assist in their practices.

“One of the biggest roles of Interventional Radiology is to be a second set of eyes,” said Dr. Baheti. “Think of us as another brain on the team. We’re approachable, happy to be here and to help provide really good service at Good Shepherd.”
