HERMISTON, Ore.-Safety upgrades will be installed at Desert View Elementary over the summer.

“This project is about providing peace of mind for families and a safer school environment for our students,” said Dr. Tricia Mooney, Hermiston School District Superintendent.

The safety project includes a new secure entry vestibule to better control access to the school, as well as improvements to traffic flow for safer, more efficient student drop-off and pickup, according to the HSD.

Construction will take place over the summer to minimize disruption and is expected to be completed before students return to school in the fall.

The secure entry project at Desert View is being paid for with funds remaining from the $82.7 million bond measure for the Hermiston School District, passed by voters in 2019.

“It’s another example of how we’re maximizing our community’s investment in local schools,” said Dr. Mooney.

The bond passed in 2019 also funded the building of Rocky Heights and Loma Vista Elementary Schools, a new secure entry at Highland Hills Elementary and an annex at Hermiston High School.
