A furious last-minute comeback attempt fell short for the Louisville Cardinals Tuesday night as Shoni Schimmel’s last-second shot rimmed out, ending the former Hermiston Bulldog star’s college career.
Schimmel’s No. 3 Cardinals were ousted from the women’s NCAA basketball tournament, losing to No. 4 Maryland by the score of 76-73. Schimmel scored 31 points in her last hurrah and added 5 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists.
The Maryland Terrapins seemingly had the game wrapped up with just over 2 minutes to play and leading by 12. But Schimmel wouldn’t let her team exit the tournament without a fight, scoring 8 points in the final 18 seconds. When All-American Alyssa Thomas hit just one of two free throws with 3.5 seconds left, Louisville still had a chance to tie the game on a 3-pointer, but Schimmel’s shot couldn’t find the bottom of the basket.
The loss not only ended the former Hermiston basketball star’s college career, it ended Louisville’s hopes of returning to the Final Four for the second-straight year. Last year, the Cardinals made it all the way to the final game before being dispatched by UConn.
