HERMISTON, Ore.-The Geer and Harper intersection realignment project in Hermiston is set to start June 22 and will impact traffic in the area.

The project will realign the intersection of Northwest Geer Road, West Harper Road, North 1st Place, and the Union Pacific Railroad crossing.

The intersection is expected to be closed until October for the project, and detours will be in place, with access between Geer and Harper Road routed through Northwest 6th Street.

Work associated with the railroad crossing is expected to last until spring 2027.

According to the City, the intersection’s unusual alignment and proximity to the railroad tracks have created traffic and safety concerns for years. Improvements will create safer traffic movements, upgrade access for pedestrians, and provide better connectivity for residents and businesses.

The project includes the addition of new turn lanes, stop signs, sidewalks, crosswalks, and roadway resurfacing.

Access to the recycling center located near the intersection will remain available throughout the project, and regular traffic flow on Geer Road and Harper Road is expected to resume by October 2026, according to the City.

The Geer-Harper project is part of Hermiston’s Capital Improvement Plan, a five-year roadmap for major investments in streets, water, and wastewater infrastructure.

More information about the project is available online through the City of Hermiston.
