HERMISTON, Ore.- After more than a decade, Umatilla Electric Cooperative (UEC) President/Chief Executive Officer Robert Echenrode plans to retire at the end of the year.

“Serving our members and working alongside our employees and board has been the honor of a lifetime,” Echenrode said. “I’m incredibly proud of what everyone has built together and confident in the path ahead.”

Echenrode became President/CEO of UEC in 2016 and guided the organization through a transformative period, one defined by opportunity, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to the members and communities the cooperative serves, according to UEC.

“Many of the decisions Robert has led over the years have positioned UEC for long-term success,” said Jeff Wenholz, Chair of the UEC Board of Directors. “His leadership has helped ensure that our cooperative remains financially strong, operationally resilient, and prepared to meet the opportunities and challenges ahead.”

Under Echenrode’s leadership, UEC has expanded and modernized its electric system to meet the evolving needs of northeast Oregon and invested in infrastructure, technology, and improved efficiency.

According to UEC, one of the many achievements under Echenrode’s leadership was the implementation of advanced technology, an investment that has led to better coordination among UEC crews, engineers, and staff.

UEC also strengthened its focus on member engagement and communication, growing engagement with well-attended annual meetings and member appreciation events during Echenrode’s time as President/CEO.

“Robert’s leadership has left a lasting mark on this cooperative,” said UEC District 3 Board Director, and longtime past board chair, Bryan Wolfe. “His vision, steady guidance, and deep commitment to our members have strengthened UEC in meaningful ways. We are grateful for his service and the legacy he leaves behind.”

Echenrode oversaw significant strategic initiatives during his time with UEC, including the creation of an in-house power supply team.

According to UEC, having a dedicated, in-house team to manage power supply is a cost-conscious approach that allows the cooperative to navigate a rapidly changing energy landscape.

Echenrode will continue to serve as President/CEO through 2026, and the UEC Board of Directors will now conduct a search for his replacement.
