HERMISTON, Ore.-Good Shepherd Health Care System (GSHCS) is hosting a free seminar on social media and child development on Wednesday, May 27, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Conference Centers 1 & 2 at 610 NW 11th St., in Hermiston, OR.

“We are experiencing a huge surge in the prevalence of anxiety, depression, and ADHD symptoms in children, and the age at which children are affected seems to be younger than ever,” said Board-Certified Pediatrician Madalina Mindrut, MD, FAAP, Pediatric Medical Director at GSHCS, who will be leading the seminar.

“The Impact of Social Media on Child Development” will focus on what is known about child brain development at different stages of life, and will explore how technology, including social media, impacts brain development in children.

“There is a high level of concern among pediatricians that children’s development, and their risk for mental illness, is greatly increased by their interaction with social media,” said Dr. Mindrut, who will share helpful, easy to implement resources for parents at the seminar.

The seminar will also examine how pediatricians, parents, caregivers, community members and anyone involved in a child’s life can help cultivate an environment where normal brain and social development, including low levels of stress and anxiety, are possible in the digital age.

“The sooner parents start educating themselves about the impact of technology and social media on their child’s development, the better,” said Dr. Mindrut. “Much can be done for toddlers, school-aged children, and adolescents to help them learn good social skills, good communication skills, and to lower their risk for mental illness.”

“The Impact of Social Media on Child Development” is free and open to the public, and Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be provided.
