UMATILLA, Ore.-Umatilla residents rejected Bond Measure 30-167 in the May 20 special election.
The $19.8 million bond measure, which would have authorized the use of property tax revenue to fund construction of a new police station, failed by a 58 percent to 41 percent margin, according to unofficial election results.
“We appreciate the engagement and involvement from Umatilla residents on this project and for all those who made their voices heard at the ballot box,” said David Stockdale, Umatilla City Manager in a statement on the election.
The City of Umatilla will now consider different funding options for the new police station, including a full-faith and credit loan. The annual debt service of the loan would be paid from the City of Umatilla’s general fund.
According to a City of Umatilla press release, there is no new revenue to fund construction, so the City Council will need to review all general fund services to determine how to best cover construction costs, including delays, reductions or loss of service.
“The City is committed to the responsible use of local resources and tax dollars to improve the livability and safety here in Umatilla,” said Stockdale.
